While Grand Theft Auto Vtook open-world games in a more serious and story-driven direction, critics saw Saints Row IV as a reminder that video games were meant to be fun above everything else. That said, I must be mis-remembering the original games because I dont recall ANY of the characters or humor involved being terribly memorable. It didnt do any one thing exceptionally well, but had a lot of gameplay elements that were strong enough to make them an enjoyable package. Given the clear sci-fi influence, critics had a tough time comparing Saints Row IV to previous games, though it seems a though they saw that has a positive. The only main complaint with Saints Row IV is that the game can sometimes feel a bit too much like a collection of disjointed minigames. Saints Row gameplay made the game 'good' imo. Almost as if the game was trying to one-up its previous entry, Saints Row IV shocks players during the tutorial by blowing up the Earth.

Originally meant to be a DLC for Saints Row: The Third called 'Enter the Dominatrix,' Saints Row IV introduces superpowers, alien invasions and Matrix-like simulations into the no-longer grounded world of Saints Row. If critics loved how over-the-top Saints Row: The Third was, it makes sense that they'd love Saints Row IV even more.
